Expert Review

7.5/10

Amrut's Neidhal is a confident, coastal-influenced Indian single malt bottled at 46% that makes a persuasive case for looking beyond Scotland and Kentucky — serious whisky at a fair price for the quality.

It's perfectly fine whisky — some nice spice and fruit notes, drinks easy at 46%. But for me it didn't have that wow factor I was expecting given the hype around Amrut. At this price bracket I'd rather reach for a Glendronach or even another Amrut expression.

Picked this up on a whim and I'm glad I did. The tropical climate aging gives it a richness you don't usually get from unaged or young single malts. Creamy vanilla and a bit of dark chocolate on the finish. I drink it neat with a few drops of water to open it up.

Nice whisky, no question. You get honey, dried fruit, and a pleasant oakiness throughout. But at nearly £100 I keep comparing it to what else I could grab at that price point, and there's stiff competition from Scottish single malts. I'd buy it again on sale.

Bought this to see what the fuss about Indian single malts is all about. Sweet on the nose with some baking spice, and the palate delivers caramel and a hint of cinnamon. Finishes a touch short for my taste but it's well made stuff. Had it on the rocks and it held up nicely.

I've been slowly working through the Amrut range and Neidhal is a solid pick. Loads of tropical fruit on the nose — mango and banana — with a spicy kick that lingers. At 46% it's got enough weight to stand up neat without being harsh. Really enjoyable dram.
