Laphroaig's Batch 012 Cask Strength delivers the distillery's coastal peat character at an uncompromising 60.1% ABV, rewarding patient sipping and careful water addition with a dense, honest Islay experience.

For a 10 year old cask strength single malt at £99.95, I think this is pretty reasonable in today's market. The nose is classic Laphroaig — seaweed, TCP, woodsmoke. I drink it with a splash of water which brings out some unexpected lemon peel and honey notes. Not for beginners but if you know you like peat, this delivers.

This is what got me into Islay malts. Neat, it's intense — medicinal peat, charred wood, a hit of vanilla sweetness hiding underneath. At cask strength you really get the full Laphroaig experience without any dilution smoothing out the edges. Worth every penny of the hundred quid price tag.

Valentina Ricci VIPsAllowed — Good but not their best batch
7/10

I've had a few Laphroaig cask strength batches over the years and this 012 is solid without being spectacular. The peat smoke and brine are all there on the nose, and at 60.1% it holds up well with ice. Slightly one-dimensional on the finish compared to batches 009 and 011 though.

Batch 012 is a beast at 60.1% but don't let that scare you off. I add just a few drops of water and it opens up into this incredible wave of iodine, smoked bacon, and sea spray. Probably the best value cask strength Islay you can get for around a hundred quid.
