8.5/10A 32-year-old Laphroaig from the early 1990s, bottled at a commanding 49.8% ABV by Old & Rare for their Coronation series. Rare, serious Islay single malt that rewards patience and attention — a bottle that justifies its occasion.

12 reviewsLook, this is a very good whisky. The nose is incredible — campfire smoke, toffee, old oak — and the palate delivers rich dried fruit and iodine that lingers forever. But at nearly a grand I kept comparing it to Laphroaig 25 which I loved almost as much for far less. If someone else is pouring I'm thrilled, but I wouldn't buy another bottle myself.

2 April 2026I try not to get caught up in limited releases but this one earned it. Neat, it opens with that signature Laphroaig peat smoke, then layers of beeswax, stewed plums, and a gentle salinity that reminded me of standing on the Islay shore. At 49.8% there's zero need to add water. One of those drams where you sit quietly and just let it do its thing.

5 March 2026I split a bottle with two friends for a birthday and we were all floored. At 49.8% it carries serious weight without being a brute — loads of coastal smoke, dried fruit, and old leather that just keeps evolving in the glass. Thirty-two years in cask and it still tastes unmistakably Laphroaig. Not an everyday dram at £960 but genuinely one of the best whiskies I've had this decade.

14 February 2026Poured this neat at a tasting night and it commanded the room. The peat has softened beautifully over 32 years into something more medicinal and waxy, with dark honey and a long maritime finish. I'd say it drinks exactly like its ABV suggests — present but balanced. A stunning whisky, though I'm not sure it's twice as good as some half-price bottlings.
