Expert Review

7.8/10

A six-year-old Swiss single malt matured in Rioja casks, bottled at a confident 49.12% ABV. Langatun delivers a wine-cask-forward dram that makes a genuine case for continental European whisky at a premium but defensible price point.

Astrid Nilsen VIPsAllowed — Interesting but pricey for 6 years

Nose is all red berries and a hint of dark chocolate, which I really enjoyed. Palate has some nice toffee and wine-soaked oak notes. My issue is the £99 price tag for a 6 year old — I keep comparing it to what else I could get for that money, and it's a tough sell when solid Speysides exist at half the price.

Picked this up on a whim and it's become one of my favourite bottles this year. The Rioja maturation brings out these gorgeous raisin and cinnamon notes I wasn't expecting. I drink it neat and it's silky smooth despite the 49% ABV. If you see one, grab it before word gets out.

Liam Anderson VIPsAllowed — Rioja cask really works here

I was skeptical about a Swiss single malt but this Langatun genuinely surprised me. The Rioja cask gives it this lovely dried cherry and spiced plum character that lingers nicely. At nearly 50% ABV it carries some heat but nothing harsh — just add a few drops of water and it opens right up.

I appreciate what Langatun is doing and the Rioja cask concept is fun. You get red fruit and baking spice up front, which is nice. But for me it finishes a bit short and thin, and at nearly a hundred quid I expected more depth from a single malt. Happy I tried it, but one bottle was enough for me.

Felix Moreau VIPsAllowed — Solid sipper, not a showstopper

The red wine cask influence is front and centre — lots of berry jam and a touch of vanilla on the nose. On the palate it's pleasant enough, with some dried fruit and mild spice, but it feels a bit young still. Give Langatun another few years of aging and I think they'll really have something special.

I poured this for friends after a big meal and everyone wanted to know what it was. Rich and fruity with that unmistakable wine cask sweetness — think stewed plums and a whisper of nutmeg. The finish has a nice dry tannic quality from the Rioja barrel that keeps it from being too sweet. Really well balanced for a younger whisky.
