Daviess County Medium Toasted Barrel Finish Kentucky Straight Bourbon arrives at 48% ABV); $49. Priced at $49.99, we assessed it with care.
Nose
A classic bourbon color, warm orange amber.
Palate
Spice and dried fruits jump off the dram. Blackcurrants, pomanders and vanilla odors appear initially and then withdraw to hazelnuts and cedar. A nice bold vanilla burst with thick leather and spicy ginger. Pumpkin pie spices of cinnamon and nutmeg come to the fore, shifting to a palate full of oak a lot of rich oak. It has an unexpectedly smooth finish of walnuts and caramel. What Daviess County misses as an opportunity to showcase toasted barrel whiskey, they make up for in delivering a classic bourbon with a long lasting palate and rich finish, sacrificing the individuality of a toasted barrel for a greater overall dram. For a very reasonable price point, this expression is for those who like a healthy bit of wood and spice in their bourbon.
