in Sparta presents Hidden Barn Kentucky Straight Bourbon bottled at 106 proof — a $74.99 expression that merits close attention.
Nose
Light amber, solid legs on the side of the glass.
Palate
Younger-smelling than I would have guessed for something aged 4-5 years; a lot of ethanol. Underneath that I find candied cherries, toast with fig jam, and Early Gray tea. Very little of the oak scents you often find in Kentucky bourbon. Zykan says she has no plans to distill her own whiskey. Her skill is in her palate, and she intends to work with partners to blend and age whiskies for Hidden Barn. She certainly picked an interesting choice for the first offering, from a relatively unknown partner with a style that is nothing like what she was producing for Old Forester.rnrnI suppose that might be the point. It suggests a new label that will be taking chances and exploring hidden nooks and crannies in the whiskey world. Doesnt sound too bad.
